The Issue
When receiving faxes via email, users may find that they can only view the cover page. When attempting to open or download the attachment, the rest of the multi-page document appears to be missing.
The Cause
Many automated fax systems bundle multi-page documents as .TIFF or .TIF image files. The default image viewer in Windows (the "Photos" app) and most web browsers often only render the very first "frame" of these files, which is why only the cover sheet is visible.
The Solution
To view the entire document, you need to change your computer's default application for these files to Windows Photo Viewer, which natively supports multi-page scrolling.
Instructions: Setting Windows Photo Viewer as the Default App
-
Save the fax attachment to your computer (e.g., your Desktop or Downloads folder).
-
Right-click on the saved
.TIFFor.TIFfile. -
Hover over Open with... in the menu, and then select Choose another app.
-
A prompt will appear asking "How do you want to open this file?". Scroll through the list and select Windows Photo Viewer. (Note: You may need to click "More apps" or scroll down to find it).
-
Critical Step: Check the box at the bottom that says "Always use this app to open .tiff files" (or .tif).
-
Click OK.
The document will instantly open in Windows Photo Viewer. You can now use the blue arrows at the bottom center of the window to scroll through every page of the fax.
