Hybrid Classroom Technology

Many RCBC classrooms are now outfitted with high-end video conferencing technology intended to assist faculty with facilitating hybrid courses that include a virtual live component.

There are two main types of technologies equipped in our classrooms that you will often hear referred to as Hybrid-Flex (Tier II) and Hybrid-Webex (Tier 1) classrooms. Let's go over the differences/benefits for each type below.

Hybrid-Flex classrooms (Tier II) make up the vast majority of our technology equipped classrooms. These rooms feature a more localized setup with all technology interfacing directly with the in-room instructor computer. The main benefit of the Hybrid-Flex setup is flexibility. The Hybrid-Flex equipment can be used with virtually any video-conferencing platform including but not limited to Webex and Google Meet. The Hybrid-Flex classroom equipment (Tier II) consists of:

  • USB Lumens VC-B30U camera with pan, tilt, and zoom functionality. Camera is controlled via a remote kept at the front of the room.
  • USB omnidirectional microphone placed on or near the instructor desk at the front of the room capable of picking up clear speech from around the instructor's desk.
  • Lumens remote to manually control the camera image or to utilize the various presets that are pre-programmed in each room.

To see it in action and learn the basics of the Hybrid-Flex classroom setup, check out the training video below.

Hybrid-Webex classrooms (Tier I) make up a small number of our total technology-equipped classrooms. These rooms feature a high-end Cisco Webex Room Kit set up. The Hybrid-Webex setup is great for hybrid courses utilizing the Webex Meetings platform and is built for seamless integration between the classroom technology and the Webex interface. The equipment in Webex-Hybrid (Tier I) rooms consists of:

  •  High-end Cisco camera with pan, tilt, and zoom capabilities. Camera controlled by the touch panel at the front of the room.
  • Ceiling mounted microphones capable of picking up clear and consistent speech from around room.
  • 10" touch panel on the instructor desk that allows instructors to quickly start and join meetings or share content or control the camera image and presets.
  • Presenter Track technology which enables the camera to automatically follow the instructor's movement as they move around the room.
